Generosity – A Hallmark of Christ-followers

God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor 9:7). When we realize that we do not own our resources, but are stewards of what has been entrusted to us by God, our hearts and minds learn to more loosely hold onto earthly things. We recognize how much we have been blessed, and we grow in our desire to be a blessing. This attitude exemplifies a heart of generosity.

Charitable Gift Annuities

A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) is a great way to make a gift to the ministries you care about while creating a steady income stream for life. CGAs are easy to set up and offer attractive rates, making them popular tools for people age 65 and older.

Simply make a gift of $10,000 or more in cash or securities in exchange for a non-revocable gift annuity agreement. Your payment rate will be based on your age(s) at the time you make the gift. You will receive a tax deduction for your gift, and part of your payments may be tax-free. At your death, the amount remaining in your CGA will be given to the organization(s) you chose.

Orchard Alliance and The Christian and Missionary Alliance follow the suggested maximum gift annuity rates published by the American Council on Gift Annuities. These rates are subject to change; however, once your gift annuity is created, the rate is locked in for the remainder of your lifetime(s). Click here to view the current rates.

  • CGA rates are based on your age at the time your gift annuity is funded
  • Create an income stream for one or two lifetimes
  • Receive an immediate partial tax deduction and potentially tax-free income for years
  • Defer or avoid capital gains tax for gifts of appreciated securities
  • Bless your favorite ministry(ies) with a gift of the residuum at your death
Options
  • Single-Life: Pays a fixed amount for the lifetime of one person
  • Two-Life: Pays a fixed amount for the lifetime of two people
  • Immediate: For current income, you may begin receiving a fixed income as early as the year in which you make your gift
  • Deferred: If you desire to begin receiving income at a fixed date in the future, you may establish the gift annuity and take your charitable deduction now; then plan to receive payments beginning at a designated future date. You must be over the age of 55 to establish a Deferred CGA. Payments must be deferred until after you reach a minimum age of 65.

Giving From Your IRA

If you are 70½ years of age or older, you can make charitable gifts directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) in any amount up to $100,000 per person, per year.

  • Gifts must be made from a traditional or Roth IRA. Funds from a 403(b), 401(k), or other retirement plans do not qualify, although it may be possible to roll funds from other retirement accounts into an IRA and then make an IRA gift.
  • In order to give from your IRA, the funds must be in your account by December 31 of the previous year.
  • Traditional IRA gifts are not deducted on your federal tax return. Instead, you avoid paying federal income tax on the required distribution because it is not included as part of your income—a great tax advantage if you do not itemize deductions on your tax return.
  • If you leave the remaining balance of your IRA to a ministry after you pass away, the funds will not be taxed. Otherwise, your estate or those you leave it to will have to pay taxes on the remaining funds.

Get Started

  • Check with your tax advisor to make sure an IRA gift is a good plan of stewardship that aligns with your charitable goals. You can also speak with one of our experienced gift and estate design consultants to review your stewardship plan at no cost or obligation.
  • When you are ready to give, contact your IRA administrator and be sure your IRA administrator places your name on the check memo line.
  • Orchard Alliance does not process IRA gifts. This educational information is provided to assist you in giving to your church and other ministries you care about. Please contact them in advance of making your gift, for further assistance.

For questions about giving from your IRA gift, please call 833.672.4255 or complete the form below.
